Waverley Borough Council to fight Dunsfold drilling

Last year, for the second time, an application from UK Oil & Gas (UKOG) to drill for oil and gas just outside of Dunsfold was refused.

Lib Dem Penny Rivers made the proposal to reject the application at Surrey’s planning committee, arguing that the adverse impact on local businesses, roads, the landscape and on the environment outweighed any uncertain national benefits.

UKOG have since launched an appeal against the decision, which will be heard at a public inquiry, scheduled for 27th July.

Lib Dem Leader of Waverley Borough Council, Paul Follows, said: “Waverley Borough Council have decided to take up its legal right to take part and fight this appeal too.

“We do this on behalf of those residents and businesses that are directly impacted, but also on behalf of all residents in defence of our natural environment and in-line with the values we have declared as part of our climate emergency motion.

“Residents groups, local anti-drilling groups, local businesses and the parish councils impacted will fight this together as a united front with Waverley Borough Council taking the lead as the local authority.”
