Waverley Lib Dems are fighting to give every child living in poverty access to free school meals, even during school holidays and periods of lockdown.
Over the summer, the Conservatives refused to offer support to families of children on free school meals. Thankfully, after a backlash in the press and a campaign led by footballer Marcus Rashford, they backed down and provided food vouchers for the six-week school holidays.
But just this week Conservative MPs, including Jeremy Hunt here in South West Surrey, voted against extending free school meals to future holidays.
Local Lib Dem campaigner Paul Follows said:
“The Covid crisis has hit the poorest families hardest and we need to ensure vulnerable children are not paying the price for that. The Lib Dem plan would provide vital support for the local families who need it most.
“The pandemic has shown us all how important it is that we look out for those in our community at risk of being left behind.
“But this Tory Government won’t change their mind and do the decent thing without being forced to. That’s why I’m asking you to sign our petition calling for them to help local families.
“With your support we can force another u-turn from this Government that will provide vital help to vulnerable young people in Waverley who already face an uncertain and worrying winter.”
