Building a Sustainable Future: New Energy-Efficient Council Homes for Waverley
Waverley Liberal Democrats are proud to be delivering 97 new council houses this year across the borough — homes that are not just affordable, but built to high energy-efficiency standards to cut bills and help tackle the climate emergency.
At the heart of this effort is the major regeneration at Ockford Ridge refurbishment and redevelopment (Waverley Borough Council). This long-term project is transforming outdated housing in Godalming into modern, high-quality homes for local families. Across multiple sites (A–F), new houses and flats are being constructed or refurbished to the highest standards, and are designed to be energy-efficient, helping residents save on heating, hot water and electricity costs. Already completed sections include new homes that are fully occupied, and further phases will deliver additional properties through spring 2025 and beyond. The regeneration also includes a green technology pilot retrofit scheme, where council homes are being updated with modern energy-saving technologies like air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels, creating smart, sustainable homes for the future. In Chiddingfold, the first new affordable homes in many years have now been handed over to the council for local residents. The 26-home development at Turners Mead — part of a wider project across five brownfield sites — represents a major milestone in the council’s commitment to sustainable housing. (waverley.gov.uk)
These new homes have been built with the latest energy-saving measures, including air-source heat pumps, rooftop solar panels and enhanced insulation, giving them an excellent energy efficiency rating and meaning lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions for tenants. (waverley.gov.uk)
Rather than building on green fields, these schemes make efficient use of previously developed land — regenerating under-used sites and protecting Waverley’s beautiful countryside. (waverley.gov.uk)
Lib Dem Councillor Janet Crowe, Waverley Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing Delivery, said:
“These new homes represent exactly what we want to achieve in Waverley — sustainable, high-quality housing that meets the real needs of our communities. By regenerating underused sites like this, we’re not only building places people can be proud to live in but also protecting our countryside and working towards our climate goals.” (waverley.gov.uk)
Across the borough, nearly 100 new council homes are on track to be delivered this year — each designed to be affordable, environmentally responsible and suitable for modern family living. This is part of the Lib Dem-led council’s ongoing commitment to address the housing crisis in Waverley with genuine, sustainable solutions.
