Celebrating 75 Years of Friendship: Farnham and Haren's Enduring Bond
Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a heartfelt ceremony in Haren Garden, just off South Street, to mark 75 years of friendship between Farnham and the Dutch town of Haren. This enduring relationship, established in 1950, stands as a testament to the power of international goodwill and community spirit.
A poignant highlight of the recent ceremony was the presence of Brian Daniels, who, as a young scout, attended the original 1950 event. Accompanied by his son, the current scout leader, Brian shared cherished memorabilia from the original jamboree, offering a tangible link to our shared past. Their stories provided very real insights into Farnham and Haren’s rich history
Reflecting on the original 1950 gathering, it's remarkable to think of the scale of the celebrations. The civic welcome featured notable figures such as Lord and Lady Baden-Powell, the Lord Lieutenant, the Bishop of Guildford, and a representative of the Dutch Ambassador. The weekend was filled with activities, including a football match that ended in a 3-3 draw, a tennis tournament, a swimming gala, and various social events.
Today, while formal ties between Farnham and Haren have lessened, the spirit of friendship endures. Each year, Farnham plants tulips—a meaningful tribute supported by local resident Dr. Hans DuMoulin. This act symbolises a connection that has stood the test of time.
As we reflect on this milestone, it's worth considering how community priorities have changed. Would we stage such extensive events for a town twinning today? Would local residents be as engaged? Do you have any ideas about how we can keep this historic friendship alive for future generations? If so, please get in touch.
