The by-election was called as a result of popular and hardworking Lib Dem borough councillor Richard Cole standing down.

Speaking after his confirmation as the candidate, Philip said:

"I am very happy to have been selected to stand to be the new borough councillor for Cranleigh East ward. I have lived here for almost thirty years. In that time, I have built up a local business and also contributed to the community through the football and rugby teams, the food bank and the Beryl Harvey Field Conservation Group.

"I know what a fantastic place Cranleigh is and as Cranleigh East’s councillor, my priorities will be:

"Recovery - I will champion our high street and work to secure investment to help our recovery.

"Investment - I will fight to protect local services in the face of Conservative government cuts and for new investment in sporting and leisure facilities in Cranleigh.

"Action - I will listen to local people and keep in touch all year round. I will be a local champion for Cranleigh who will work hard to create a greener, safer and stronger community.

"I hope that local residents will give me their support on 7th October.”

Outgoing Lib Dem councillor for Cranleigh East, Richard Cole, added:

"It has been an honour to represent Cranleigh, and to work with so many of you.

"Whether it be protecting services, or demanding better for our environment, I'm so proud of what we've achieved together."

With your backing on October 7th, Philip will be an excellent replacement, who will build on Richard's achievements and continue to fight for Cranleigh.
