Repairs Begin on Haslemere’s “Lethal” Petworth Road After Years of Pressure
A Victory for Local Campaigners & Liberal Democrats
This essential infrastructure project follows a sustained campaign led by the Haslemere Herald and Liberal Democrats in Waverley, who repeatedly pressured Surrey County Council to act.
Local campaigner Theresa Meredith-Hardy remarked:
“For years, residents have had to put up with dangerous conditions on one of our main routes. It shouldn’t take this much pressure to get the basics right, but when councillors and the community work together and keep the issue in the public eye, things happen.”
Surrey County Councillor John Robini, who has championed the improvements, praised the move as “a fantastic result,” while cautioning against “short-term, poor-quality repairs.” He emphasized: “Our roads need proper investment … Haslemere deserves better.”
What Works Are Underway
- Drainage works started on 22 September, aimed at fixing overflow pipes into the stream below, scheduled to be completed by the end of the month.
- Resurfacing will follow, conducted under partial night-time closures to minimise disruption.
Why This Matters
For months, indeed, years, the condition of Petworth Road has been a source of local concern. Despite £100,000 being ring-fenced for repair, funds lay unused while the road worsened.
Local resident Roger Lowry, one of the earliest people to voice the issue, welcomed the start of works:
“It’s great to see the drainage work finally underway. It’s been a long time coming, but this mustn’t be another half-measure.”
Furthermore, recent resurfacing in nearby areas (Lower Street, Woolmer Hill Road, Grayswood Road) has already made visible improvements, giving hope that Petworth Road will soon reflect the same upgrade.
What Waverley Liberal Democrats Stand For
The Waverley Liberal Democrats have consistently advocated for accountability, investment, and safety in our local infrastructure. The commencement of work on Petworth Road is a tangible example of how persistent local pressure, allied with active political representation, can force action.
We will continue to monitor the works, hold Conservative led Surrey County Council to account, and press for lasting, high-quality outcomes, not just cosmetic fixes.
