We are proud to announce that Cranleigh’s brand-new leisure centre has been given the green light—delivering on our promise to invest in healthier, more sustainable communities.

Thanks to years of determined campaigning, this transformative project marks a major step forward in local investment, public wellbeing, and climate responsibility.

Modern Facilities for Everyone

The new leisure centre will offer a variety of modern, bright, spacious and accessible facilities, including:

  • A six-lane, 25-metre main swimming pool
  • Larger teaching pool with movable floor
  • Enhanced fitness suite and studio
  • Modern café and community spaces
  • Improved soft play area

Built to the Highest Environmental Standards

Liberal Democrat councillor Liz Townsend, portfolio holder for Planning, Regeneration and Economic Development, has been at the forefront of ensuring that the leisure centre is not only fit for purpose, but fit for the future.

This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a facility that meets the needs of residents and reflects our responsibilities to the planet. By investing now in the right design and technology, we’re protecting local services for the long term.

From the outset of the project Liz has championed the need for exceptional Passivhaus environmental standards, ensuring:

  • High energy efficiency
  • Guaranteed reduced long-term operating costs
  • Sustainable materials and construction practices
  • Alignment with Waverley Borough Council’s climate emergency commitments

What is Passivhaus?

Passivhaus buildings are designed to use very little energy for heating or cooling. They are carefully insulated and airtight, making them extremely efficient and comfortable. This means lower running costs, reduced carbon emissions, and a better indoor environment for users—all year round.

Thanks to these principles, the new centre will:

  • Use 60% less energy per square metre than the existing facility
  • Cut annual operational carbon emissions by 75%
  • Help Waverley meet its climate goals while keeping public facilities affordable to run
