Ewhurst Infant School secures its future as plans to become a Primary School are approved
Ewhurst Infant School has taken a significant step toward safeguarding its long-term future, following Surrey County Council’s decision to approve its transition from an Infant School to a full Primary School. The move comes after several years of the community being concerned that the School, which is due to celebrate its 180th anniversary next year, could close due to declining pupil numbers.
In 2016, the school had 81 children enrolled; by 2024, that number had reduced to 41. A major factor behind the fall in numbers has been the lack of a natural educational pathway beyond Year 2. With no linked junior school, many families opted for all-through primary schools that could offer continuity from Reception to Year 6. The newly approved expansion will now allow children to remain at Ewhurst throughout their primary education, supporting stability for families and strengthening the school’s long-term sustainability.
The decision has been warmly welcomed within the by residents. Waverley Borough Councillor Michael Higgins, who campaigned on behalf of the School praised the outcome and highlighted the hard work of staff, Governors, parents, and the steadfast support of local residents. Thanks were also extended to Ewhurst & Ellens Green Parish Council, Surrey County Councillor Liz Townsend, and MP Chris Coghlan for their support and backing of the proposal.
The approval marks an important moment for the village of Ewhurst, securing the future of its much loved school for generations to come.
