Terry Weldon for Haslemere
Originally from South Africa, I’ve spent the past decade here in Haslemere with my husband Raymond. Now mostly retired, I continue to work part-time delivering medicine for the Haslemere pharmacy, which has given me some insight into the difficulties faced by some of the elderly, along with the wide range of conditions in our town. I’m an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and a regular reader for the Masses at Holy Cross Convent.
Back in 2014, I was diagnosed with a GastroIntestinal Tumour (GIST), which led to major surgery to remove my entire stomach along with the tumour. I’m currently a volunteer and trustee of GIST Cancer UK, following my own diagnosis and successful surgery. Consequently, I’ve developed a strong interest in the challenges facing our NHS and social care provision.
Politically, I’ve been a lifelong activist for liberal, democratic values back in South Africa and in the UK. Elected as a Lib Dem Councillor in 2019 to Haslemere Town Council, I have served as chair of the local planning committee, and on the climate and CIL committees. In 2023, I was elected to Waverley Borough Council, where I also serve on the planning committee.
Looking ahead to the new West Surrey Unitary Authority, my primary interests will continue to be in planning and providing genuinely affordable housing, along with health and social care, where I hope to make a useful contribution.
